The House of
The New No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency Novel
Alexander McCall Smith
Review by Brenda Repland
Mr. Polopetsi –part-time employee of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency – comes to the two ladies (Precious and Grace) with a request to help a “friend of a friend” who has been wrongly accused and dismissed from her job. The two undertake to find justice for the woman but little do they know that this will lead Precious to a shocking secret involving her own family.
Through a tangled web, Precious learns of a Mingie Ramotswe which surprises her as she thought she knew anyone who shared her surname. Her investigation leads her to what should be a joyful surprise but that brings only heartache in its implications.
Typical of this series, the author incorporates the many aspects of Botswana culture – from food and local customs to the environment on the edge of the Kalahari Desert and what constitutes good manners in this peaceful country.
The Detective Agency characters continue to delight with their unique personalities. We want to shake Grace Makutsi for her outlandish outbursts tolerated by the ever-patient Precious.
Enjoy the latest venture into Bostwana and its locals.
